Property Tax:
Tax Bills are mailed in August with two due dates: September 15th and December 15th (dates may be adjusted if the 15th falls on a non-business day). Interest will be assessed on September 16th and December 16th for the respective due dates. See the Tax Collector's page for the current tax rate. 
Please be aware, the Town has a Property Tax Assistance Ordinance. When you file your State of Maine income taxes, if you qualify for a State of Maine Property Tax Assistance Credit, you may qualify for a rebate from Harpswell. Check here for more information.


Motor Vehicle:

Please note:  Private auto sale transactions and first time auto registrations from out of state/out of state sales will not be processed after 4:15 pm and 6:15 on Thursdays.
Re-Registration - You will need previous registration, insurance card and odometer reading.  You may also  register on-line through Rapid Renewal - See our ONLINE SERVICES tab.
New Registration - You will need dealers tax certificate, title application, insurance card and odometer reading.
Casual Sale - You will need title (if auto is 1995 or newer), Bill of sale, insurance and odometer reading.


Vanity Plates:
Updated from State on 2/2023: To obtain a vanity plate, register your vehicle at the Harpswell Town Office with a regular plate, wait approximately six weeks and then apply for the vanity plate of your choice ONLINE through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).


Excise Tax:

Excise Tax is based on the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)


Boat, ATV, Snowmobile:

Re-Registration - You will need a copy of last year’s registration
New Registration - You will need dealer’s tax certificate
Casual Sale - You will need bill of sale with all vehicle numbers
