Harpswell fire fighters and volunteers have been working on updating and adding AEDs to our town. Part of the updating process has been mapping where each AED is located, and then making that information available to the public. So that all potential AED users will have access to updated AED location information, we have implemented the use of a free informational App known as Pulse Point. Pulse Point will describe AED locations, map that location, and can even show a photo of the AED's position within a building. Summer Campfires: Keep it Small, Not Tall!
July is prime time for campfires, s'mores, and enjoying our beautiful summer nights. Because escaped campfires are a leading cause of wildfires during Maine's peak tourist season, let's make sure we keep our fires contained and safe.
The Golden Rules of Summer Campfires:
- Choose the Right Spot: Never build a fire under low-hanging branches or on top of deep pine needles and roots. Keep it in a designated metal or stone ring.
- Drown, Stir, Repeat: When it's time to turn in, don't just toss a bucket of water on the flames and walk away. Drown it, stir the coals thoroughly with a shovel, drown it again, and check it with the back of your hand. It should be ice-cold before you leave it.
- Keep it Manageable: Keep recreational fires small and always supervise kids and pets around the fire ring.
- Permit Required? You generally do not need a permit for backyard campfires and cooking fires (using charcoal or solid fuels) on your own property as long as they are smaller than three feet by three feet, not used for disposing of debris, and not located in a Red Flag Warning Area.
