There are many small islands in Harpswell designated as habitat for migratory birds. Uncle Zeke Island at the northern end of Harpswell Sound, and Flash Island located at the mouth of Ridley Cove all provide important sea bird habitat. Jenny Island is home to many different kinds of terns, including the rosette terns, which are considered endangered. Many of these islands are off-limits during the summer nesting season, visitors are welcome to explore these public lands after August 15th and before March 15th.
Maine islands represent the only breeding sites in the United States for Atlantic puffins and razorbills and are also home to black guillemots, common eider, and Leach’s storm petrels. Some islands support rare birds such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, osprey and roseate terns. The undeveloped islands in eastern Casco Bay, designated by the Maine Audubon as one of 22 Important Bird Areas in the state, provide critical habitat for migratory birds, constantly displaced by fast-paced residential growth along the shores of Casco Bay.
Access by water only between August 15th and March 15th. Please do not land on the island or disturb the birds between March 15th and August 15th.
