Harpswell Community Television

Harpswell Community Television

In the early 1980s, Harpswell acquired a cable television franchise and with it a cable channel and video equipment with which to create and cablecast local television programs. The equipment served the community well through expansion and growth as the community channel gained non-profit status and eventually an over-the-air broadcast license. The original small studio and production facility in the Town Office had to be abandoned as the town needed the room and the needs of the station had grown. A huge community effort resulted in the construction of a new building designed from the ground up as a television station. Today Harpswell Community Television stands as the only over-the-air broadcast public, educational and governmental access station in the United States and appears on the cable systems of four towns.
