Embracing Our Working Waterfronts
With over 216 miles of coastline, Harpswell is home to over 275 licensed lobster harvesters, more than 50 licensed commercial shellfish harvesters, oyster farmers, and numerous related support businesses. This vibrant industry is the backbone of our town's economy and a key part of what makes Harpswell special!
On July 11, 2024, the Select Board adopted a set of Working Waterfront Policies designed to support our fishing and harvesting community. These policies aim to ensure that new residents understand the vital role of the working waterfront and what it needs to thrive.
The policies also protect commercial fishing and harvesting activities from changes in the Town's ordinances that could negatively impact their operations. Additionally, they highlight the state law that protects commercial fishing activities from nuisance claims, as long as they are following best practices.
Harpswell is proud to be a Working Waterfront Community, but we need to work together to ensure it remains so.
